Turner limps onto Broadway stage

Actress Kathleen Turner will return to the Broadway stage this weekend, complete with leg brace and cane, after injuring her knee earlier in the week.

The 54-year-old star is performing in comedy The Third Story at the Lucille Lortel theatre. Three performances were cancelled following her injury.

"Kathleen Turner personifies the attitude of the Broadway trouper," said co-artistic director Bernard Telsey.

"Against any odds, she must - and will - make her performance."

The Third Story revolves around a mother-and-son screenwriting team who flee Hollywood for Omaha in the 1940s.

Turner has been twice-nominated for a Tony award for her stage performances, most recently in 2005 for her role in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

She went on to receive the Evening Standard Award for best actress, after the play transferred to London in 2006.

However, the actress remains best known for a string of performances in hit film comedies in the 1980s, including Romancing the Stone, Prizzi's Honour and The War of the Roses.

She won a new generation of the fans with her turn as Chandler's transvestitite father in the long-running TV sitcom Friends.
