Coldplay have enjoyed huge success in the US

Coldplay have won seven nominations for 2009's Grammy awards, leading a strong British showing at US music's most prestigious awards ceremony.

The record of the year award will fall into British hands, with Leona Lewis, Adele, Robert Plant and M.I.A. joining Coldplay on the shortlist.

Adele and Duffy will compete for best new artist and Radiohead join Plant and Coldplay in the album of the year list.

US rapper Lil' Wayne leads the overall nominations with eight.

Plant and Radiohead have five nominations each, Adele has four.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 8 February.

Global success

Coldplay won best alternative album Grammys for their first two releases, and their fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends - released in June - has been a global success.

Their nominations include best rock album, best rock song, and pop and rock performance accolades.

Leona Lewis will be hoping to add to her awards haul

Led Zeppelin frontman Plant has been critically acclaimed for his album with US star Alison Krauss, Raising Sand.

The pair are nominated together for their work on the album, with their track Please Read The Letter up for record of the year.

Radiohead took the music industry by surprise last year by releasing their album In Rainbows via their website, inviting customers to pay what they thought the album was worth.

It later got a more conventional release and it is up for album of the year and best alternative album.

In addition to the five nominations for the band, producer Nigel Godrich is also up for an award for his work on the album.

Incredible year

Adele, who topped the BBC News Sound of 2008 poll in January, has four nominations after an incredible first year on the music scene.

The 20-year-old Londoner is up for song of the year and female pop vocal performance for Chasing Pavements.

Welsh star Duffy, who also performed strongly in Sound of 2008, has a trio of nominations, including pop vocal album for Rockferry, and pop vocal performance for Mercy.

X Factor winner Leona Lewis also has three mentions on the shortlist, with Spirit up for pop vocal album.

London-born singer M.I.A. has had limited mainstream success in her home country, but scored a US top five single with Paper Planes in the summer.

That song has given the 31-year-old her sole nomination, in the record of the year category.
