Glasvegas win debut album award

The Scottish rock band have been offered their own Xfm residency

Indie rockers Glasvegas have won Xfm's New Music Award for their self-titled debut album.

The Scottish band were nominated by the radio station's listeners in a poll to find the best British debuts of 2008.

A judging panel including Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody, New Order's Peter Hook and Radiohead producer John Leckie whittled down the final 10.

"It's a first class debut album in that it is memorable, passionate and well formed," Leckie said.

"Every track is a winner, leaves you wanting more and wondering what will come next. I wish I'd produced it," he added.

Gavin and Stacey actor Mathew Horne, and Dirty Pretty Things musician Carl Barat also helped judge the final albums.

Glasvegas, who featured in the BBC's Sound of 2008 poll, have been offered their own Xfm residency and will select tunes later this year.

Their album charted at number two when it was released last September, while their singles Geraldine and Daddy's Gone both reached number 12.

The group also put together a melancholy Christmas EP A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like a Kiss), which received rave reviews in the music press.

Lead singer James Allan has been praised for his hard-bitten lyrics about "broken Britain and knife culture and that".
