Actor Nick Cannon - the husband of pop diva Mariah Carey - has been named the new host of America's Got Talent.

The 28-year-old will take up his role in the summer, when the fourth series of the show starts on US TV.

Cannon, who tied the knot with Carey in the Bahamas last April, replaces Jerry Springer, who quit the job due to other commitments including a stage play.

Springer fronted the past two seasons of the popular programme, with Regis Philbin the show's first presenter.

Million dollar prize

Cannon, whose first screen role was in the Nickelodeon series All That, is to work on a number of projects for US network NBC, according to its boss Ben Silverman.

The actor and singer has also appeared on MTV in his own show, and won a breakthrough award at the Cannes film festival for his role in 2006 movie Bobby.

He met chart-topper Carey, 38, on the set of one of her music videos, and the pair wed after a two-month romance.

The most recent series of America's Got Talent was won by opera singer Neal E Boyd.
