Slumdog Millionaire is leading the Evening Standard film awards shortlist, with three nominations.

Danny Boyle is in the running to add to his Golden Globe for best director, while lead actor Dev Patel has landed a nomination for most promising newcomer.

But it misses out in the best film category, between Frost/Nixon, Hunger and low-budget production Unrelated.

Double Globe winner Kate Winslet is up for best actress for her roles in Revolutionary Road and The Reader.

Head-to-head battle

The Reader has also gained film-maker Stephen Daldry a nomination in the category for best director.

Winslet faces competition from Samantha Morton in Mister Lonely and Tilda Swinton for her role in Julia.

Michael Fassbender is up for best actor for playing Bobby Sands in Hunger, alongside Michael Sheen for Frost/Nixon and Pat Shortt in Garage.

On the Peter Sellers Award for Comedy shortlist, Happy-Go-Lucky stars Sally Hawkins - who triumphed at the Golden Globes - and Eddie Marsan go head-to-head.

Slumdog Millionaire's third nomination comes for technical achievement for production designer Mark Digby.

The winners of the awards, which have been handed out since 1973, will be announced on 2 February.
