Television survival expert Bear Grylls has suffered a broken shoulder after a fall while on expedition in Antarctica.

The 34-year-old, who presents a show on Channel 4, is expected to return to the UK to receive further treatment.

Grylls was not filming for one of his programmes, but taking part in a sponsored trip which had intended to tackle a previously unscaled mountain.

The adventurer also makes a show for the Discovery Channel called Man vs Wild, which is screened in the US.

The accident happened in a remote area of Antarctica, and Grylls is not expected to be airlifted out of the expedition's base camp until Wednesday due to bad weather.

Extreme techniques

He is likely to receive treatment in South Africa before returning to the UK.

The Discovery Channel said in a statement that Grylls had been taking part in an expedition which looked into uses of alternative energy.

It was also to raise money for a children's charity supported by Grylls.

His programmes, including Channel 4's Born Survivor, see Grylls stranded in remote areas from the Siberian wilderness to the inhospitable deserts.

He has become famous for using extreme techniques to survive in such conditions, including killing alligators and eating maggots.

Last year, Grylls faced claims that some aspects of his shows were edited to make them more compelling.

He later said sorry if viewers felt misled, and promised the next series would be "100% transparent".
