Singer Taylor Swift's record Teardrops on My Guitar has been named song of the year at the BMI Country Awards in Nashville, Tennessee.

Hank Williams Jr was also recognised as a musical icon at the awards, handed out by performing rights organisation Broadcast Music Inc.

Casey Beathard, composer of songs for Kenny Chesney and Billy Ray Cyrus, was named songwriter of the year.

Actress Nicole Kidman also attended the event with singer husband Keith Urban.

Kid Rock, Miley Cyrus and former American Idol winner Carrie Underwood were among the other stars present.

Underwood and Urban were honoured for contributing two tracks each to this year's list of the 50 most-performed country songs.

Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gregg Allman and Kenny Chesney were among the singers who performed in a tribute to Williams Jr, son of country music legend Hank.

Williams Jr has had 10 number one singles, with six of his albums reaching platinum status.
